in 2017, reports about persecution, torture and assassination of lgbtiq* people in chechnya made waves in the international press. ramzan kadyrov, chechen leader, who is strongly backed by the kremlin, denied all accusations and even the existence of queer people in chechnya. david france’s film is dedicated to the work of a moscow based group of activists, who have come together to save queer lives and smuggle people out of chechnya. using deepfake technology and with the support of volunteers, who „lent“ their faces to those affected, the film allows to maintain the activists‘ anonymity.

tina is 30 years old, lives in new york without a residence permit and works as a taxi driver to pay the bills. she lives with her mexican grandmother eliana, who struggles to understand tina’s beginning process of transitioning. tormented by the constant fear of being deported and after witnessing transphobic violence in her neighborhood, tina becomes active in the local transgender community. the garden left behind is an intimate and multifaceted picture about the reality of an immigrant trans person in the trump era. the film does not only address trans realities on a narrative level but also makes sure that all transgender characters are played by transgender actors.

benedito senna is blind, and perhaps for that reason his life choices as much as his poetry are so imagetic. after moving from the brazilian city of belém to paris, he fell in love and married jean luc, a devoted reader of his poems. it was also in paris, where he met another benedito, a film director and visual artist from brazil. based on their mutual interest in images and poetry, these two artists start an amazing friendship that finally leads into the common project of shooting a movie together. during the filming process, they realize that things are no longer the same and differences arise. the last image is not only a reflection on the visual and its place in a blind man’s life, but also a reflection on filmmaking itself.

This short film collection is a celebration of the innumerable and diverse forms of queer sexuality. So called “key parties” are being reinvented, BDSM practices are shown in a kinky yet intimate and raw way, and anonymous sexual encounters in the lesbian cruising scene are explored. Watch pin-up beauty Mimosa experience an otherworldly orgasm and meet freshly-fucked foodies order a special delivery. Also questions are being raised: about belonging and feeling home in queer scenes, about being “queer enough.” They lead into a playful exploration of sexualities, joy and pleasure.

yana ugrekhelidze’s debut feature documentary instructions for survival accompanies alexander, a transgender man, and his wife mari through a turbulent period of conflicts caused by anti-lgbtiq* sentiments widespread within the georgian society. while alexander must keep his transition a secret and is still identified as “female” in his passport, which means he cannot legally find work, mari decides to become a surrogate mother in exchange for 12,000 dollars. the couple’s originally pragmatic plan to leave georgia with the money and seek freedom in europe turns into an emotional dilemma when alexander and mari begin to develop a relationship with the unborn child.

agate moss by sélim mourad is a visually stunning film essay about life, death, and reincarnation. the films characters are torn between nostalgia and hope, between destruction and creation. they travel between different worlds and artistic media and yet, they are still situated in a very specific scenario, which is the one of a crisis-ridden lebanon. agate moss is the last part of sélim mourad’s political trilogy about the body, after linceul (2018) and cortex (2019), and once again the queer, naked body plays an essential role in it. framed by a philosophical narrative and combining painterly images with mythical motifs, mourad’s new film is a unique aesthetic experience.

this unscripted, fully improvised colombian movie by director ruth caudeli, is a tale of five young women who have gathered for a celebratory dinner. the occasion is the sudden return of marce, who had also disappeared without any warning two months ago. even when she reveals the secret of her disappearance, it appears as if the group could not accept or believe her explanation. by capturing the dinner party through each participant’s eyes, the film reflects on how guilt can color our perspectives and memories. leading ladies depicts a night in which secrets and lies begin to unravel, lies that have been saved for years and that will come to light during this special meeting.

claudia and maria, roam the streets of the city of guatemala. claudia works at a call center and is uninterested in the world around her. she lives with her activist grandfather, who tries to persuade her to join his cause. maria unlike claudia, is more spontaneous and lives with her mother in the outskirts of the city. the chaotic streets are filled with common stories of abuse, unforgiving police officers, and charming secret corners. everything changes one night when they are attacked by three men. although they manage to escape, claudia is faced with the dilemma of choosing revenge or listening to her grandfather’s Advice. gunpowder heart is a realistic account of how claustrophobic it is to live in a patriarchal society where crimes against women go by unpunished.

mo, a practicing muslim and successful doctor, is recovering from a heartbreak, when he is introduced to the all-american, white actor kal at a west hollywood party. dreading to spend ramadan alone, mo is surprised by kal’s offer to break fast with him. breaking fast is an uplifting rom-com that explores the beginning of a relationship during the month of ramadan. based on a short film of the same name, which had received overwhelmingly positive responses after being presented in cannes, the film was successfully made into a feature by director and writer mike mosallam.
